Thought I would share six sentences today from my award winning novel sci-fi/futuristic romance, Midnight’s Ghost. It’s one of those books that takes you on an absolute ride the whole book and it was just as much fun to write. And, you know, space opera isn’t complete with a starship crash…

“Let’s hope this tin can holds together to make it through the atmosphere,” Wallace said quietly as he settled his chin on my shoulder to watch the planet draw closer. I did my best to keep my eyes off the numbers in the lower starboard corner of the screen. The same figures reporting our altitude in rapidly decreasing increments.
“This your way of sharing the glory, Wallace?” I asked in reference to his choosing to stay on the bridge with me.
“Hell yes. Can’t let you have all the fun, can I?”

For those new to this, the rules are simple:

1) pick a project – a current Work in Progress, contracted work or even something readers can buy if you’re published

2) pick six sentences

3) post ‘em on Sunday

Taking a moment before today’s SSS post, so please forgive your fearless leader for her faux pas. But I found out a few days ago that my sci-fi/futuristic/space opera, Midnight’s Ghost, is a finalist in the Futuristic Category of the Romance Writers of America Fantasy, Futuristic & Paranormal Chapter’s 14th Annual PRISM awards. It’s among some fantastic company and I am thrilled just to be a finalist! In fact, I’m still pinching myself in shock.

So how about six sentences from Midnight’s Ghost and I drop you right into the thick of things?

I continued to watch Wallace level man after man when they volleyed shots in return as they fought for their lives. A few men got hits in, but Wallace didn’t seem to notice.
I winced when a lower ranked officer managed to get a shot past Wallace’s defenses and the blast tore away the fabric of his shirt at the shoulder, burning through skin, tissue and muscle all the way to bone. Wallace’s form didn’t give a hint to the amount of pain it must have caused, but I suspected the levels of endorphins and adrenaline tearing through him was enough to make him unaware of any such pain.
His face a distorted mask of rage, Wallace raised the damaged arm, leveled the weapon at the officer’s head and pulled the trigger. He spun on his heel and continued on his mission before the man’s lifeless body even hit the deck plate.

I was twelve again, transported back to the house my father moved us into after my mother’s passing. Despite the darkness, summer humidity hung in the air, thick and heavy on my skin as I stared up into space. Crickets sang their nightly song as fireflies silently flew by with their soft golden lights beaming against the blackened summer sky. The one celestial body that shone down on me was the lone object overhead.
My father referred to it as midnight’s star.
There would be no wishing tonight—this star wasn’t about to fall.

Welcome to the second day in the week long blast of my favorite things! Today I’ll share six of my favorite lines from my second book, Midnight’s Ghost. Plus, I’ll be giving away a download. But wait! There’s more. I’ll also give away a copy of one of my favorite science fiction romance books today.

So, one of my favorite things about writing Midnight’s Ghost were all the action sequences I got to write. My lead female is a spaceship pilot, so there were plenty of opportunities to take advantage of her skills–especially since they seem to spend a good bit of time trying to get away from the bad guys. Here are six…er, seven ’cause it wouldn’t make sense otherwise…of my favorite sentences from the book.

“Taran, you’ve got no options here. The smartest thing is for me to—”

“There are always options, Wallace.” I cut him off, uncaring to the fact he seemed determined to go about whatever cockamamie plan he had come up with. I was more determined because I now felt responsible for Kerr and getting him back home. “I will get you and Kerr to Delphin Five because you are going to pay me for every bit of trouble you have caused since the day I met you, and dammit, you will not be someone I’m only allowed to visit once and a while for conjugal visits. Everyone strap in, things are going to get a little wild.”

Now on to one of my favorite science fiction romances: Grimspace. It’s the first book in the Sirantha Jax series by Ann Aguirre. Here’s the blurb: As the carrier of a rare gene, Sirantha Jax has the ability to jump ships through grimspace-a talent which makes her a highly prized navigator for the Corp. Then a crash landing kills everyone on board, leaving Jax in a jail cell with no memory of the crash. But her fun’s not over. A group of rogue fighters frees her…for a price: her help in overthrowing the established order.

Yep, all that and a love story too. March is … yeah, March is.

While Midnight’s Ghost is an eBook, Grimspace is available as an eBook or in paperback. Yep, I’ll ship you the paperback if you’re the winner if you so choose.

So, what do you need to do in order to win these two books? Just comment on this post (until midnight EST). Yup, that’s it. Couldn’t make it any more simple.

The contest schedule for the week:

<del datetime="2010-12-28T12:05:42+00:00">Monday, 12/27: Flash of Dark & one of my favorite paranormal romance/urban fantasy books (2 books)</del>

It’s that time again. What have I been up to?

I just finished up my latest work in progress, Ragged Edge, a contemporary erotic romance involving two men and a woman. Gotta say, this whole going into new territory is a lot of fun. I enjoyed writing their story and it tore at my heartstrings as I discovered what made them all tick. Me and my fondness for broken heroes. Right now it’s with my CP and once I get it back and whipped into a smooth and polished state, I have to decide what to do with it.

Ragged Edge marks the third full length novel I’ve written this year. Hardware (which is already out) and Midnight’s Shadow (out in early 2011) are the other two. I’ve nearly finished whipping the third book in the Rebirth series into shape, but I don’t expect it to be done until after the first of the year–or close to it.

Speaking of Midnight’s Shadow…the first book in that series, Midnight’s Ghost, marked a bit of a milestone. Yesterday, 11/21, was the day I submitted it for consideration for publication with Liquid Silver Books in 2009. I can’t wait to share the continuing saga of Taran and Wallace with readers next year. All I have to say is two words: shower scene

Now I’ll dig my heels into a sci-fi romance short and a co-authored paranormal romance with Stacey Kennedy. This brain of mine needs a break from all the blistering hotness it’s been dealing with lately. There’s also another short in my brain somewhere that’s begging to be told–so you see what I have to work with for the next several months. LOL

On to some self-pimpage:

~*~

This month my newest release, Midnight’s Ghost, is one of those books. So, after reading this exclusive excerpt, head on over to the EM website to leave a comment to be entered to win!

~*~

“Let’s go, Reece. We need to get out of here fast,” I issued the order, slapping at the gantry lift panel as the three of us dove into Eidolon. I winced as I heard a few shots ping into the hull of my ship and wondered what kind of damage I was going to have to repair if we managed to get out of this unscathed.
Kerr started to head to where his cramped quarters were while he was onboard, but I managed to grab him by the scruff of his neck before he could escape. His arms and legs flailed as he protested my method of ensuring that he followed, but ceased when Wallace gave him a stern look.
“Thanks,” I said gratefully, knowing that in a pinch, we could probably use another pair of hands on the deck. Even if he didn’t know what he was doing, Kerr was obviously physically capable of helping out wherever he was needed. Since I thought this fell into the category, and Wallace’s statement earlier had marked this as Kerr’s problem, I dragged him onto the bridge with us.
Wallace slid into the chair beside mine; examining the status of the systems we would need online in order to leave. The same systems we just completely shut down an hour ago so we could dock inside the station.
“I see your talent for causing unrest isn’t just predicated to the bars on Nagol, Captain.” Reece’s sarcasm was unmistakable and I wondered if he’d been taking lessons during his downtime.
“Shut up or I’ll turn you into a trash compactor. Thrusters on full.” I was pleased to see several systems come online faster than Reece and I could have done alone. It was one of the advantages of having someone else onboard who knew the basic ins and outs of the ship. The extra pair of hands would be helpful, regardless of who they belonged to.
Reece, keying in systems of his own, added to his streak of being a master of the obvious. “We’re still tethered into dock, Captain.”
I slapped the release controls for the lines that kept us connected to the station. “Not anymore.”
Wallace shook his head as his fingers worked the controls to help out Reece, his motions just as quick and precise. “Theirs, not ours.”
“Blow them,” I ordered, my fingers flying over the panel in front of me as I saw a group of IGP guards closing in, weapons firing so even more shots pinged off the hull. Eidolon was going to look like a block of Swiss cheese if we didn’t get out of here soon.
“We can’t, there are too many people out there.”
I studied the images on the screen in front of me and realized Wallace was right; firing our shipboard weapons inside the docking station would surely result in unnecessary innocent casualties. Sure, the IGP was chasing us, but that didn’t mean the Surmies mother and child sitting peacefully on the bench just a few yards away needed to suffer as well.
With a low growl of frustration, I threw myself back from the helm controls, unbuckled my harness and stormed through the bridge. I ignored the alarms blaring a warning about a possible breech in the hull as I stalked through the corridor.
I toed the access cover at mid ship as I drew my weapon and dropped onto my stomach with a grunt. Stale heated air had me wincing as I dropped my head out of the hatch and looked around. I sighted the tethers securing us and studied them for a few seconds. It only took a few shots more than I would have liked, but I managed to hit the two deck clamps. Their power panels went dark as they short circuited and much to my satisfaction, the clamps withdrew their hold.
I heard the shouts of protest from the IGP guards over the increasing whine of Eidolon’s engines. Annoyed, I fired off a few quick shots at the group closing in and was pleased to see one of them drop their weapon as he fell to the ground incapacitated.
I slapped at the panel to close the hatch as I pushed myself up and jogged back to the bridge, a pleased smile on my face. I kept any comments I was going to make about sending a woman to do the job to myself and slid into my chair, ordering Reece to get us out of here.
Amid the hail of weapons firing at us, we blew through the docking hatch for incoming shuttles, narrowly missing a civilian transport coming in to dock.

****

For this month’s Excerpt Monday here’s a excerpt from my newest release, Midnight’s Ghost.

The doors whipped closed behind me and I blindly turned a corner, slamming right into Wallace’s chest. I scowled at him and he held up his hands in defense.

“I was just going to check on him and try to salvage the rest of the night.”

“He’s just fine and dandy,” I muttered, shifting my steps so I could walk around him. Wallace’s hand shot out to stop me and I reeled in the temper threatening to unleash because it wasn’t Wallace I was this angry with. I was exhausted and wanted to go back to my room even though I knew it wouldn’t matter anyway. I was too keyed up to go back to sleep now, too haunted by the images I knew would follow me. I resisted shrugging his hand away even though I wasn’t in the mood for a fight with him.

He shifted his grip, reaching for my hands and used his thumbs to flip open the catches securing the fabric around my wrists. I flinched, trying to pull away, but the stern look he shot my way had me relenting with a deep sigh of acceptance. I nodded and

slipped my thumb under the seam to slide them off.

When he saw I was going to remove them myself, he moved his hands away and let me attend to the chore. Despite my earlier hesitations, I pulled off the gloves and slid them both into one of my pockets.

They were such a part of me that I felt exposed without them. Wallace knew it would make me uncomfortable and that was probably why he’d done it. I started to hide my bare hands in my pockets, but Wallace grabbed for them. As his fingers closed around mine, the flash of consciousness was immediate. With expert ease I spent years being taught, I calmed the chaos with my mind and felt a quiet sereneness envelop us both.

“You always did have a way with your hands,” he whispered quietly, sliding his hands around so his fingers twined with mine.

“What is it that you want, Wallace?” The question wasn’t even fully out of my mouth when the image of Wallace and I wound around each other in bed played out like a porn vid in my head. I shut it down just as quickly and narrowed my eyes at him. “File it away or I’ll leave you with the belief that you’re the scum I have to scrape off my boots after climbing out of the reverse osmosis tanks, got it?”

“I need to explain, Taran.”

By the tone of his voice, I could tell he wasn’t talking about trying to break down the events that lead to his escape from Widow’s Bay. “I’ve not asked for an explanation.”

“But you’re going to get one anyway.”

Shocking images flashed in my mind and I faced the accident of Midnight’s Star all over again.
